Sugar Crisis: Sugarcane Producers Warn of Falling Prices, Imports, and Insecurity
The Colombian Association of Sugarcane Producers and Suppliers (Procaña) expressed concern about the complex social and economic situation facing the sugarcane sector in Colombia. The sector faces high pressure due to falling sugar prices, dollar depreciation, ethanol imports, deteriorating security in production areas, and reduced productivity caused by rain. Procaña warns that this situation threatens 280,000 formal jobs and calls on the government for improved rural security and policies to protect the sector's sustainability.
