California Avalanche, One of the Deadliest in Decades in the US

The death of at least eight skiers after being swept away by an avalanche in Northern California constitutes one of the deadliest avalanche tragedies in the United States in recent decades. EFE Over the last 45 years, these have been the most significant snow and ice avalanches in the US: – June 21, 1981. Eleven climbers died after an ice and snow slide in the Mount Rainier area, Washington State. It is considered the deadliest avalanche accident in the United States. – March 31, 1982. Seven people died as a result of a large avalanche, after four days of storms, at the Alpine Meadows ski resort in California, as the avalanche buried the lodge and parking areas of the center. – May 12-13, 1986. An avalanche on Mount Hood (Oregon) caused the deaths of nine people, seven of whom were students and two were teachers from the Oregon Episcopal School. The tragedy occurred when they were caught in a storm and buried by snow. – February 19, 2012. A group of three skiers lost their lives after being swept away by an avalanche in the Tunnel Creek area of Stevens Pass, Washington. – January 18, 2019. A snow avalanche at the Taos Ski Valley resort in New Mexico seriously injured two people. Both were rescued, but later died from their injuries. – January 10, 2024. An avalanche at the Palisades Tahoe ski resort in California caused the death of one man and left another person injured. The slide occurred shortly after the ski slopes opened. – March 4, 2025. Three skiers lost their lives under a huge avalanche while backcountry skiing in the Chugach Mountains near Girdwood, Alaska. – February 17, 2026. Eight skiers are found dead and one more is missing as a result of an avalanche at Castle Peak, in the Sierra Nevada, Northern California.
