Authoritarianism, from Núñez to Abelardo

It seems that Colombia has remained stuck in time. We have not yet moved past the very violent historical political events of the second half of the 19th century, during Núñez's time. It seems then that time moves in a circular manner, it turns, it goes, and it returns to the same starting point. And that national life and its progress continue to revolve around seeking peace and establishing order. Núñez argued that the first thing was pacification and immediately after social and economic progress, in which he was not very successful (a topic to be discussed in another article), although he tried by all means to achieve it.

Authoritarianism, from Núñez to Abelardo

TL;DR

  • Colombia's national progress is characterized by a cyclical struggle to achieve peace and establish order, reminiscent of 19th-century events.
  • Núñez prioritized pacification and then economic progress, with some infrastructure achievements in Cartagena despite opposition.
  • The article argues for the application of authority and order as a national policy, citing Uribe Vélez's attempts and Santos's change in policy.
  • Current challenges, including drug-trafficking-funded crime, require a severe plan for peace and order, similar to Núñez's authoritarian 'scientific peace'.
  • Candidate De la Espriella is presented as capable of implementing such a plan, which includes strong authority and repression of disorder.
