US Clarifies That Sanctions Against Russian Tankers Bound for Cuba and North Korea Remain in Effect

The United States modified on Thursday the lifting of sanctions granted to Russian tankers at sea, specifying that cargoes destined for Cuba and North Korea remain subject to restrictions. EFE Amid rising crude oil prices, Washington allowed on March 12, through an amendment to its sanctions regime, the sale of oil transported by Russian tankers. The original liberalization order had only established one exception: transactions involving Iran. It now specifies that such sales of crude oil to Cuba and North Korea are also prohibited, as well as to some regions of Ukraine occupied by Russia. Russia was subjected to sanctions due to the invasion of Ukraine. The Treasury Department license authorizes the delivery and sale of Russian crude oil and petroleum products that were loaded onto vessels at or before 12:01 PM (4:01 PM GMT) on March 12, until 12:01 PM (4:01 PM GMT) on April 11.
