An early warning!

Once again, the El Niño phenomenon looms threateningly, with its usual dry season. This is one of the two extreme phenomena that characterizes climate variability; the other is La Niña, which is associated with high precipitation and a winter wave. As rarely happens, on this occasion, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the EU's European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) agree in their forecast of an 80% probability of El Niño occurring in the second half of this year.

An early warning!

TL;DR

  • El Niño phenomenon, associated with drought, is predicted with 80% probability for the second half of the year by NOAA and ECMWF.
  • Colombia's National Interconnected System (SIN) faces an energy deficit projected for 2026-2027 due to delays in generation and transmission projects.
  • Energy companies are in financial crisis due to unpaid government subsidies for energy consumption, exceeding COP 3.6 trillion.
  • The SIN has low resilience, with hydropower (over 60% of installed capacity) heavily impacted by drought, and most reservoirs having less than four months of regulation capacity.
  • The demand for energy is expected to grow exponentially due to artificial intelligence and data centers, requiring a continuous, firm, and massive supply.
