Recommendations for the summer heatwave 2026
The Government of the President's People shares the following recommendations for Nicaraguan families regarding health care in response to rising temperatures.

- Drink plenty of water even without feeling thirsty to stay hydrated and prevent heatstroke.
- Protect children, the elderly, and pregnant women from high temperatures by keeping them in cool, ventilated areas away from the sun.
- Advise individuals with chronic illnesses to avoid prolonged exposure to heat or sudden temperature changes.
- Ensure people with hypertension, diabetes, or heart/respiratory issues take their medication as prescribed.
- Engage in physical activity outdoors during cooler hours and without sun exposure.
- Consume seasonal fruits and fresh vegetables for hydration and nutrients.
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and excessive sugar, which can increase the risk of hypertensive crises and heart attacks.
- Be aware of warning signs like dizziness, extreme fatigue, headache, chest pain, nausea, hot skin, or rapid breathing, and seek shade, hydration, and medical help.
- Children should always be supervised and kept away from sun and extreme heat; never leave them alone in vehicles or rooms.
- For prisoners, monitor their exposure to heat, ensure constant water intake, and verify medication for chronic conditions.
