A Hidden Voice

Do you mean you also think this child is retarded? Miriam asked her husband. If he's not retarded, then why doesn't he speak? Hasn't the doctor told us that there's nothing wrong with his ear and that he has no physical problems? It must be mental deficiency, the husband replied. Don't say things like that without thinking. My son is not deficient at all, I know. He speaks to me with his eyes, the mother replied. This fragment I share is part of the first pages of a memorable book: "A Hidden Voice," by the Iranian writer Parinoush Saniee. A novel published in Spanish in 2016 which, fortunately, Alianza Voces has reissued this year.

A Hidden Voice

TL;DR

  • It critiques adult expectations that all children should conform to perceived normality.
  • The book stresses the significance of expressing love and affection, contrasting it with cold exchanges of words.
  • It values diversity and the importance of family gatherings where members listen to and care for each other.
  • The narrative suggests that adults could gain much by looking at things differently, living with more tranquility, and being less clumsy in filial love.
