How did the hippos get to Colombia? The story dates back 40 years
A few days ago, the measures announced by the Ministry of Environment to address the expansion of hippos echoed. This, under three lines: euthanasia, relocation, and confinement.

TL;DR
- Hippos were first brought to Colombia in the 1980s by Pablo Escobar for his zoo at Hacienda Nápoles.
- The animals originated from a zoo in the United States and were part of an exotic collection.
- Following Escobar's death, the hippo population grew unchecked, spreading to various regions via the Magdalena River.
- Hippos are now considered an invasive species in Colombia, endangering native animals, people, and the environment.
- Estimates suggest the hippo population could reach over 783 by 2034 and surpass 1,400 by 2039, with approximately 169 currently existing.
